Kinja'd!!!

My wife started working from home so we’re going down to one car. My wife wants a hybrid and reliability, I want something fun and as new as possible (no more than 5 years old). We have a kid and 65 lb dog, so we need four doors and some sort of hatch. Budget of $30k.

My wife is leaning toward the new rav 4 hybrid because of the reliability and that wonderful blue it comes in.

Any better suggestions?

I don’t think anybody would consider a RAV4 Hybrid fun (besides the little boost of torque), however it’s a dang fine car. I think I would suggest the hybrid RAV over the conventional motor to anyone.

Non suv, an Accord Hybrid would be more fun in regards to having better steering feel, lower to the ground, etc.

Do you want AWD? If not Check out the Niro. It’s not fun like a Mazda 3 hatch but peppy enough in sport mode. the Plug in Hybrid is 1 second faster to 60 vs the regular Hybrid. It’s a good compromise of size, efficiency and price.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a19160404/2018-kia-niro-plug-in-hybrid-test-review/

But based on everything you’ve said I’d say just wait for the 2019 Rav4 Hybrid

Fun to drive hybrid hatch doesn’t exist in the mainstream market today. If you want more fun you have to either drop the Hybrid or drop the hatch and go for a sedan.

Much more interesting and less ugly than the Rav4. It’s also available with a stick if that suits you and your wife. My grandmother has a 2018 Crosstrek with an automatic and I honestly really liked it when I borrowed it when I moved.

Why wouldn’t it be fun? It has more power than the regular version and the regular is pretty good.

Lexus NX300H?

The CT is a bit small inside for a car seat and a 65lb dog.

I mean we might have different perspectives, but I don’t think I could ever consider it a “fun to drive” vehicle. The initial torque helps, but it’s still a regular crossover. The 19 is much better to drive than the past RAV but didn’t light my world on fire.

Basically what I’m saying is if you want a “fun” Hybrid, a car version is a better experience.

H ave her drive the Crosstrek and the Rav4. T he new plug in hybrid Crosstrek is slow but technically good and feels like a smaller vehicle to drive , the new Rav4 is bigger but might be a better option... and Demuro loves it so it’s gotta be at least halfway decent. If you can stand the looks and stereotype the normal Prius isn’t a bad car.

That’s fair but I disagree in this instance. Most the time the hybrids are underpowered (excl Volvo’s) but this time the Rav4 hybrid has highpower and torque. I haven’t driven it yet, since it’s not out, but I think it’d be just as good if not better.

I did the Toyota booth this year at the auto show and I had three Rav4s, they are pretty nice! I can’t be against that choice.

I'm hoping the Niro is fun, it definitely ticks all the boxes and can significantly cheaper than the Rav 4

Test drive one and decide for yourself. I would keep my expectations realistic but if you like it , great.

Heard the Rav4 Hybrids will start arriving March so might be worth the wait based on what I’ve read. Seems the XSE Hybrid is actually the fastest and best handling rav4 model.

In my opinion the Subaru isn’t even close to the Toyota. It feels cheap inside, is loud and buzzy (the regular gas version, unsure what the hybrid is like) while the Toyota will be quieter , more comfortable, more reliable and feel premium in comparison.

I wanted to like the Crosstrek, but it’s more crude inside than my GF’s Forte. I do think that the hybrid could be better driving than the regular version. Perhaps less noisy, perhaps it jives with the transmission better than the gas version does with the CVT.

Like the thing about it is that it probably sucks as an off road car, and as a hybrid. But it’s good in the sense that it is a hatchback with a hybrid engine.

I’m disapointed that Toyota chose to place the NIMH battery in it rather than the LI-ion one they put on higher trim cars. given the added weight of the crossover, in my mind it would’ve made more sense to have the LI-ion pack.
